Study: CBD Absorption May Be Increased By High Fat Foods
A new study describes that consuming fatty food with CBD might enhance its absorption.
Research scientists at the University of Minnesota examined the mechanism by which fatty food would change the absorption of Epidiolex, a CBD- based medication authorized by the FDA for the treatment of rare forms of epilepsy.
Patients were divided into two sections, one taking the Epidiolex capsules with a breakfast burrito and the other on an empty stomach.
Professor Angela Birnbaum, the study’s co-author, said that the type of food could largely affect the percentage of CBD that gets absorbed in the body. While fatty foods can improve the CBD absorption, it can also enhance the discrepancy because not all meals carry the same amount of fat.
The researchers have drawn three main conclusions:
- “When high fatty foods are taken with CBD, it leads to an increase in CBD exposure;
- Taking CBD with food increased the amount of CBD in the body by four-times as compared to fasting, and the maximum amount measured in the blood of participants by 14-times;
- no cognitive change consistent with the previous study were reported.”
Birnbaum said that a challenge is to sustain the constant concentration of drug in the blood for epilepsy patients. This research indicates that if the patient take it differently, occasionally with or without food, the concentrations of CBD could vary significantly. Patient would be more susceptible to seizures due to variations in blood concentrations.
As the study shows, consuming CBD with equal quantities at the same time appears to help in maintaining blood concentrations.
These findings can also help those who take CBD supplements derived from hemp better absorb their products.
Conservative Organization Drafts Bills For CBD And Marijuana Banking
A conservative group known as American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is urging for the legalization of marijuana banking and CBD.
ALEC is a group of private stakeholders and conservative lawmakers who meet together to discuss and draft model policies that they submit for consideration to states.
ALEC drafted bills during its 46th annual meeting that would permit the CBD legalization and marijuana banking.
In its banking resolution, the group states that the congress has sole authority to address the banking issues of cannabis by introducing laws that offer security to depository institutions that offer financial services to legal cannabis-related businesses and service providers for such businesses.
The cannabis industry currently runs on a cash basis, which is defined as “inefficient, expensive, opaque by ALEC, making it harder for state regulators and law enforcement to monitor illegal activities.
The group also drafted a resolution that would legalize the CBD oil and hemp.
Hemp has not yet been legalized by three states: South Dakota, Mississippi, and Idaho.
Overall, the proposal was in compliance with the requirements defined in the 2018 Farm Bill.
However, ALEC’s bill would permit the use of CBD in beverages and food, which is considered as illegal by FDA.
Federal Agency Authenticates Banking Services Are permitted For Hemp Businesses
The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) has released interim guidelines stating that credit unions are permitted to provide banking services to hemp businesses.
Rodney Hood, the chairman of NCUA, said, “legal hemp businesses offer exciting new prospects for rural communities. I believe today’s interim guidance is in line with the mission of the cooperative credit system of the nation to support people who have been ignored and underserved.
Hood said that Many credit unions had a long and productive tradition of providing services to the farming industry. He hoped that credit unions would carefully consider whether they had the ability to safely and professionally present the legally functioning hemp-related businesses within their fields of membership.
Hemp companies found it challenging to get funds despite the approval of the 2018 Farm Bill.
As a result, several members of congress, including 2020 presidential candidate Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has pressurized the federal agencies to explain the matter.
The NCUA said, in response to a letter from Sen. Bennet, it might release new regulations after the release of regulations by USDA regarding hemp production before the 2020 planting season.
The NCUA confirmed With its new guidance that it would provide additional guidance once those regulations are published.
The guidance states, “Hemp offers new opportunities for societies with an economic base involving agriculture. The NCUA urges credit unions to carefully consider whether they had the ability to safely and professionally present the legally functioning hemp-related businesses within their fields of membership.”
