CBD Cannot be a Therapy For Coronavirus, Rather It May Help

There is no evidence available to suggest that CBD can cure coronaviruses such as COVID-19; however, some studies suggested that it may help.

Cannabinoids, like CBD, operate within the both human and animal endocannabinoid systems, controlling various functions to maintain homeostasis.

One of these functions is the programmed cell death, apoptosis, which kill the

One of these functions is apoptosis, which is programmed cell death that helps to kill diseased cells like virally infected cells and cancer cells.

As research has authenticated, CBD and other cannabinoids can kill various harmful bacteria.

Researchers at The University of Queensland found in June 2019 that CBD was CBD was “remarkably effecient” in in-vitro destroying Gram-positive bacteria, including staph, strep and antibiotic-resistant bacteria or “superbugs.”

Other studies indicate that CBD is efficient against viruses such as hepatitis C, which is in the same family  as COVID-19 (Coronaviridae).

CBD is also a famous anti-inflammatory, that can be effective against some viruses that need inflammation to continue infecting cells.

Unluckily, lack of knowledge about COVID-19 makes it  ambiguous whether the virus requires inflammation to spread.

The ability of CBD to reduce inflammation also means that it is an immunosuppressant that may reduce
the ability of person to fight coronavirus if it does not require inflammation to further infect cells.

Another factor that does not allow to use CBD, or cannabinoids against these diseases is the fact that most research regarding viruses and CBD has not been conducted on humans.

More research and analysis should be undertaken to address this lack of information in order to understand the ability of CBD and other cannabinoids to counter viral infection such as COVID-19.

Hemp, CBD Legalization Bill is Passed by The South Dakota Legislature

A bill has been passed by the legislature of South Dakota legislature legalizing hemp that is expected to be signed by the Governor Kristi Noem.

A similar legislation was disapproved by Governor Noem last year; however, she would sign a hemp bill in January of this year if lawmakers kept on to her “guardrails.”

These guardrails comprised:

  • Restriction on smokable hemp
  • Inspection and supervision licenses and regulation by the Department of Agriculture and Department of Public Safety.
  • The legislation should be self-funding through fees.
  • A permit will be required for transporting the hemp.

It was the toughest task to provide funding for the program as legislature and Noem argued about the amount.

Ultimately, a budget of $3.5 million was proposed to launch the program.

If Noem signs the bill,  an emergency provision would put it into effect immediately.

After the approval of bill, South Dakota will have to prepare and submit a hemp plan to the US Department of Agriculture for authorization before farmers can start growing hemp.

Recently, the USDA approved hemp proposals for the states of Georgia and Montana, bringing the total number up to 10 approved states.
